Explanation of the gate symbolism
At the foot of the gate, we see the roots that gave way to a prosperous future. The foliage points out the fertility of the land and its agriculture.
The George Cross enhances the silhouette of the Union Jack as well as symbolising The Wash and its tributaries; the life-giving waters irrigating the land wash away the ghost of the mediaeval past depicted by the stained glass iconography of Empress Matilda and the bloody civil war.
Not least are the emblems of the Fleur-de-Lis and the sacred Christian cross, a replica of an archaeological cross found in Lincolnshire.
The column also depicts the waters with the endless struggles forged around its shorts.
And in the centre of it all, we find the Imp as a custodian of traditions.
